Our house-blend soil is packed full of key ingredients for a happy houseplant: perlite, charcoal, orchid bark and leca to boost aeration, and also includes both organic compost and slow-release fertiliser to feed your plant plenty of important nutrients.
In their native environment, many houseplants grow shallow roots along the rainforest floor, in chunky, aerated and nutrient rich soil, so for your plants to be happy you'll need to mimic this at home, focusing on two key points: nutrients and aeration.Constantly composting decaying flora and fauna gives plants plenty of food in nature, however when they’re in a small pot in your lounge room it’s important to feed your plant both with nutrient-rich soil and fertiliser. Cheaper soil mixes are also often made with "filler" rather than nutrient-rich ingredients.
The thick layers of natural soil from broken branches, leaves and other matter also allows oxygen to reach the root systems and excess water to flow through and drain away. This is why optimum potting mixes are thick & textured rather than fine, which is prone to compaction and can ultimately cause root rot and encourage pests like fungus gnats.
